The Evolving Responsibility of Design

As design’s influence expands, what must it become more responsible for?

As design influences more behaviours, decisions, systems and experiences, its responsibility extends beyond whether something is useful, usable or desirable. This participatory session will invite the room to examine: • What design should be held responsible for today • Where responsibility sits when many functions shape outcomes • Which consequences are routinely considered or ignored • How commercial, organisational and technological pressures affect judgement • Whether designers can be accountable for outcomes they do not fully control • What design must learn to notice as its influence expands • What responsible practice should require from individuals, teams and organisations Design leaders will help frame the inquiry, but the direction of the conversation will be shaped by the experiences, tensions and questions brought forward by everyone in the room.
